K one st, slip one st knitwise; return slipped st and the knit st to LH needle. Pass the slipped st over the knit st and off the LH needle.


sr-s dec: (right slanting dec; worked on WS)
Slip next st on the LH needle purlwise, then purl one st. With LH needle, pass the slipped st over the purl st and off the RH needle.

• One pair each sizes 6 and 8 (4 and 5mm) needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
• Size 6 (4mm) circular needle, 16″/40cm long
• Cable needle (cn)
• Stitch markers

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS
• Chest at underarm 41 (45, 47)”/104 (114, 119)cm
• Length 24½ (25, 26)”/62 (63.5, 66)cm

GAUGE
34 sts and 28 rows to 4″/10 cm over Cable pat using size 6 (4mm) needles.

FOR PERFECT FIT, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

Note: See sweater #40 for Cable pat. The schematic on page 79 is correct.

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 158 (170, 180) sts. Work in k1, p1 rib for 2″/5cm, inc 18 (20, 20) sts evenly across last (WS) row—176 (190, 200) sts. Change to larger needles.
Beg Cable pat: Next row (RS) Work 10 (3, 8) sts in rev st st, place marker (pm), work Cable pat over 156 (184, 184) sts, pm, work 10 (3, 8) sts in rev st st. Cont in pat as established, working sts inside markers in Cable pat and rem sts in rev st st, until piece measures 14 (14½, 15)”/35.5 (37, 38)cm from beg, end with a WS row.
Armhole shaping
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 4 sts at beg of next 0 (2, 4) rows, 3 sts at beg of next 2 (2, 0) rows, dec 1 st each side every other row 4 (3, 4) times—138 (146, 152) sts. Work even until armhole measures 10½ (10½ , 11)”/26.5 (26.5, 28)cm. Bind off all sts.

FRONT
Work as for back until same length as back to armhole shaping, end with a WS row.
Armhole and V-Neck shaping
Next row (RS) Bind off 6 sts, work until there are 80 (87, 92) sts on RH needle, k2tog, join 2nd ball of yarn and ssk, work in pat to end. Working both sides at same time, cont to shape armhole at outside edges as for back, AT SAME TIME, cont to dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 23 (27, 29) times more, every 4th row 6 (4, 4) times. Work even until piece measures same length as back to shoulders. Bind off rem 39 (41, 42) sts each side for shoulders.

FINISHING
Block pieces. Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband
With RS facing and circular needle, beg at right shoulder, pick up and k40 (44, 48) sts evenly along back neck edge, 53 (53, 57) sts along left neck edge, pm, pick up and k53 (53, 57) sts along right front neck edge—146 (150, 162) sts. Join, pm, and work in rnds of k1, p1 rib for 1″/2.5cm, working decs at center front on every rnd as foll: Work to 2 sts before center front marker, k2tog, sl marker, ssk, work to end of rnd. Bind off all sts loosely in rib.
Armhole band
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and k112 (112, 120) sts evenly around armhole edge. Work in k1, p1 rib for 1″/2.5cm. Bind off all sts loosely in rib. Sew side seams, including armhole band.
